Handicap Accessibility, Code Research, Life Safety, and Planning/Zoning

Sigma Pi - Gamma Iota, Worcester, MA
  • November 2014 through July 2016
  • Provided International Existing Building Code (IEBC) review and developed an emergency/life safety egress plan with the local Building Inspector.  This included fire assemblies at stairwells, additional railings and handrails, illuminated exit signs, mini-horn strobes, emergency lighting, and a connection to a new sprinkler/alarm system.
  • Prepared construction documents and met with MAAB Executive Director to solicit approval for accessibility compliance for the Fraternity house modifications such as access ramps, an accessible bathroom, accessible bedroom, and accessible public spaces.  Relief was provided and the house has been brought up to handicap accessible standards.
  • Prepared a complete bid package for the installation of necessary replacement windows. Contacted and interviewed potential contractors, solicited bids, prepared a bid evaluation, and supported Sigma Pi with contract negotiations.
  • Renovations to interior finishes including flooring, woodwork restoration, paint, trim, etc.
  • Project included stamped and signed permit drawings for construction.

Pi Zeta of Lambda Chi Alpha, Worcester, MA
  • June 2016
  • Designed and oversaw construction of renovations to the first floor accessible bathroom of a WPI Fraternity house.  The bathroom was at one time built to meet code, but had fallen out of compliance.  At the request of the Fraternity, the Board took action to upgrade the bathroom to meet current ADA/MAAB standards.  The bathroom was gutted to the studs, and all fixtures were relocated.
  • Project included stamped and signed permit drawings for construction.

Sigma Alpha Epsilon - Massachusetts Delta, Worcester, MA
  • December 2017 - Current
  • Providing accessibility upgrades, egress/code upgrades, and living environment improvements.  The project will include two additions to the buildings, one that will connect the two buildings in a way that allows for an accessible pathway from sleeping rooms to the common areas. The second addition will include the an addition which doubles the size of the living/meeting room, provides two additional bedrooms on the second floor, and creates a internal second means of egress.  The process for compliance will include presenting to the City of Worcester Inter-department Review Team (IRT), the Historic Commission, the Massachusetts Access Board, and of course, working very closely with the Trustees and active brothers.

FIJI - Phi Gamma Delta

  • Provided a Facility Assessment Plan to determine the future of the Fraternity House.
  • Identified physical obstacles in the facility that limit the accessibility of its programs or activities to individuals with handicaps.
  • Described in detail the methods that will be used to enhance the facility.
  • Specified a schedule for taking the steps necessary to achieve compliance.
